Physical Education for Progress Grant

Dear Parents/Guardians:

The Parsippany-Troy Hills SchoolDistrict is the recipient of the U.S. Department of Education's CarolM.White Physical Education Program(P.E.P.) Grant. The goal of the grantis to assist the school district by providing us with $400,000 toexpand and improve our physical education and health program.

We created a "Wellness for Life"program to teach students to monitor their personal fitness and to alignthe physical education and health programs with state standards. UsingP.E.P. grant funds, our district has purchased new technology to helpstudents develop their own personal fitness plan. The technologyincludes Tri-fit hardware and software, hand-held computers for physicaleducators, new computers for the Middle School P.E. teachers, heartrate monitors and some strength equipment for a wellness center at ourschool.

Students will be taught how to tracktheir fitness progress by collecting data from their heart rate monitorsand entering it into personal risk appraisals. Students will learn toimprove and maintain their personal fitness levels.

Students will strap on heart ratemonitors to gather heart rate data, which can be downloaded into acomputer program creating a comprehensive fitness report. Students willnot be compared to normative standards or to one another; rather, theywill be able to clearly monitor their progress toward fitness over time.

Your child will have the opportunityto purchase their own heart rate monitor strap if they choose to. Allstraps used during class will be sanitized between classes using thesanitizing protocols recommened by the manufacturer.

If you have any concerns orquestions, please contact your child's physical educator or theSupervisor of Health and Physical Education, Linda Guerrini(973-263-7180 ext. 7249).

As a result of this program, we anticipate:

-    students will increase their participation in physical activity outside of school

-    the new technology will help students to better understand the importance of   fitness

-    students will gain the skills and knowledge necessary to implement a fitness plan

As a health and physical educationdepartment we are committed to the premise that physical activity helpsour students succeed academically. We are working to give your childrenthe tools and opportunities they need to live healthier lives now andwell into the future.
